The colonial polyps that form soft coral are protected by a fleshy mass strengthened by glassy spicules. Each polyp has eight hollow tentacles around a central mouth. The polyps are connected to each other. Soft corals are filter feeders. The polyps extend to feed on plankton. TABLE border="2" cellpadding="10">
