Joop Bakker, was born on September 9, 1945 in Dordrecht, The Netherlands. He moved to Arnhem ten years later. In 1965 he joined the Royal Netherlands Air Force as a fighterpilot. In total more than 3500 hours were flown . Most hours were flown on the F-104G Starfighter and the last 11 years of his flying career were flown on the F-16. In 1991 he graduated from The Katholieke Universiteit Nijmegen,  faculty of law. In 2000 he was retired from the Air Force after numerous functions in operational units, the Air Staff, in the NATO Command and Control Organisation and as a diplomat in Budapest. Since the retirement he lives in Magyargencs, Hungary, where he considers his main task to be the renovation the Barcsa kastély to its original splendour. He is married to Birgitt Peeters and has two sons, Peter (’71) and Robert (’74), and daughter Mariska (2005).
